Southern Florida District Judge, Judge Aileen M. Cannon announced her “preliminary intent to appoint a special master” to review the documents seized by the FBI during the raid of Mar-a-Lago following the request by former President Donald Trump and his legal team citing, who cited “exceptional circumstances.”
Trump and his legal team filed a motion requesting that the records seized during the raid of Trump’s residence be independently reviewed by a special master on Monday (August 22), noting that the raid “involved political calculations aimed at diminishing the leading voice in the Republican Party, President Trump.”
Trump and his team have speculated that given the timing of the raid — a few months before the midterm elections.
Cannon responded to the filing, stating she had concluded after reviewing Trump’s submission noting “the exceptional circumstances presented.”
Writing in her Saturday filing, Cannon stated, “Pursuant to Rule 53(b) (1) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the Court’s inherent authority, and without prejudice to the parties’ objections, the Court hereby provides notice of its preliminary intent to appoint a special master in this case.”
The hearing to determine if a special master should be appointed has been set for September 1 at 1:00 p.m. in West Palm Beach, Florida, prompting Cannon to order the Department to file a response by August 30.
The DOJ will have to provide “under seal” and “more detailed Receipt for Property specifying all property seized pursuant to the search warrant executed on August 8, 2022.”
